In the wake of the failure of rationalism, which has long dominated the philosophical stage,to provide more compelling explanations for the pressing moral situation, people are increasingly turning to alternative approaches to make sense of the problems that arise in the moral realm.Along the road to the resurgence of virtue ethics,Michael Slote’s moral emotionalism theory offers a fresh possibility and method, drawing on the development of Western Sentimentalism Ethics and Moral Psychology, and nourished by the feminist care ethics. As a result,Virtue Ethics is revitalized and able to advance further in contemporary times.Michael Slote,an important representative of contemporary Western philosophy, has pushed the thinking about the relationship between emotion and reason to a deeper level. In his quest to deepen the moral stance of Emotionalism,he has woven an exclusive moral emotion system that includes Meta-Ethics and Normative Ethics. At the heart of Slote’s Moral Emotionalism theory lies the concept of "Empathy".By endowing this concept with innate and objective characteristics,it is extended to the moral domain, aiming to prove that empathy is the root of moral behavior."Caring" serves as the theoretical method, providing a set of answers relating to personal justice and public justice in the real moral domain.Drawing on the Yin and Yang philosophy of Chinese philosophy,Slote attempts to balance and transcend reason and emotion by utilizing the concept of "Receptivity".This approach is a protest against the Western intellectual tradition’s excessive emphasis on rational control and injects an "Eastern element" into his theory. The interaction of "Empathy","Caring" and "Receptivity" in Slote’s system constantly grinds, blends, and progresses toward mutual integration. While the utility boundary of empathy has its limitations,it cannot be a comprehensive criticism of Slote’s theoretical system. On the contrary,it can stimulate a more detailed exploration of its functions and limitations.
