This is a report on the translation of chapters 3 and 4 in The Science and Technology of the Environment by James Speight. The book gives insight into the composition and function of various ecosystems in detail from a multidisciplinary perspective, and popularizes relevant environmental science and technology to investigate how to mitigate and clean up various pollutants. The selected two chapters primarily provide an overview of two ecosystems, the atmosphere and the hydrosphere,as well as the related environmental issues and disposal of pollutants. The report is expected to provide useful reference for researchers engaged in EST translation and ecological environmental issues. The source text,as an informative scientific and technical text, employs considerable technical words and complicate long sentences with strict logic, standardized language, and a strong specialty.Catford’s translation shifts theory, serving as the theoretical basis of the project, prioritizes semantic equivalence over formal correspondence, which is consistent with the characteristics of scientific and technical texts.Under the guidance of the theory, based on the differences between English and Chinese,as well as the linguistic features of sci-tech texts, multiple translation techniques, such as division, addition and conversion, are employed in the project to address various translation difficulties, with the goal of enriching the application of translation shifts theory in EST translation.
