A Report On The Translation Of Unsettled-What Climate Science Tells Us,What It Doesn’t,and Why It Matters (Chapter Ⅲ-Ⅳ)

This is a translation project report.The source text of the translation project are Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of Unsettled-What Climate Science Tells Us,What It Doesn’t,and Why It Matters,written by Steven E.Koonin.In Chapter 3,the author analyzes the relevant data and studies,and concludes that carbon dioxide and methane emissions from human activities have the greatest impact on climate.In Chapter 4,the author introduces the ways of building computer models to predict climate so as to help human beings better understand climate changes.The translation project not only helps humans to better understand and grasp climate change,but also enables them to reflect on their own behaviors and take appropriate measures to protect the environment,thus achieving harmony between humans and nature.Guided by Eugene Nida’s theory of functional equivalence,this project seeks to convey the information of the source text in a concise and clear manner while maintaining the stylistic features of the source text.The translator analyzes the linguistic style features of the source text and illustrates with examples of the translation difficulties encountered in the translation process and the corresponding solutions.In the translation process,the main problems faced by the translator are the translation of abstract nouns,passive structures and complex sentences.To address the translation difficulties,the translator uses translation techniques such as addition,conversion,division and restructuring to strive for functional equivalence between the source language and the target language.
