A Report On The Translation Of Pandemics: The Basics(Chapters 3)

At present,the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on all countries,which has deeply influenced people’s live and work,including socializing,working,and traveling.In addition,the COVID-19 pandemic has also had a huge negative impact on global economic development,international exchanges,and people’s physical and mental health.Therefore,popularizing this disease that concerns all mankind to the masses and summarizing the ways to deal with the impact of the pandemic are of great significance to the development of human beings and to responding to future changes in the pandemics.The report selected the third chapter of Pandemics: The Basics as the analysis text,which mainly described the infodemics,the relevant measures taken by the authorities to deal with the infodemics,and the influence of the media during the pandemic.In that chapter,there is no lack of expertise related to the pandemics,which is a major difficulty for target readers who lack relevant background knowledge.The three principles under the theoretical framework of Skopos theory aim to explain the original text to readers in an understandable way in light of the background of the readers,without violating the fidelity of the original text.Therefore,the author decided to adopt Skopos theory to conduct the translation,in order to better explain to readers the outbreak’s causes,detail the different secondary disasters the pandemic has created,and impart the fundamental understanding of the disease.During the ztranslation process,the author consulted a large number of books,documents,related news and parallel texts to deepen the understanding of the text and improve the accuracy of the translation.Aiming at the analysis of translation difficulties,this report mainly analyzed the translation methods such as Contextualization,Free Translation,Conversion and Division used in dealing with the translation difficulties of Polysemant,Compound and Complex Sentences.In addition,it also described the problems to be solved in this translation practice.During the process of this translation practice,the author found that Skopos theory has strong applicability in this kind of information text.Skopos theory helps to improve the fluency of the translated text,allowing readers to clearly understand the information of the original text.Through this translation practice,the author realized that there were still many deficiencies in personal translation.In future studies,the author tends to accumulate more background knowledge in various fields for the purpose of better dealing with translation difficulties in different types of texts.
