| Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device to polish articles up,but also a way of cognition.Metaphors appear frequently in our daily communication and can be seen everywhere in literary works and academic papers.Metaphor translation determines the translation quality of literary works or academic papers,and determines whether the connotation and implication of the original text can be effectively conveyed.Only when the translators have a full sense of the original text and metaphor and adopt appropriate translation strategies can they achieve the effect of the original text.The Scandal of Susan Sontag,source text of this report,which is a collection of twelve academic essays discussing the achievements and controversy of Sontag.When reading translation text Sontag on Theater(chapter six),it was found that there were a large number of metaphors in the text,which caused the reader’s reading difficulties.For this reason,how to deal with metaphors is the emphasis and difficulty in translation practice.Different metaphors involve magnitude knowledge background,which requires careful consideration and hard verification.Guided by the conceptual metaphor theory,this report analyzes the examples of metaphor in the text.When translating metaphors,the translator needs to consider both cultural context and contextual context.With the help of the important concepts such as ontological metaphors,structural metaphors conceptualize and entailment,it summarizes five translation methods: preserve vehicles,preserve vehicles with annotation,extend metaphors by making up implied meanings,abandon vehicles,change vehicles.This translation practice has proved the guiding significance of conceptual metaphor theory for translation.And it’s hoped that this can make contributions to the future study of metaphor in translation practice. |
