Pearl S.Buck’s writings on Chinese culture influenced America’s view of China, and her transnational writings constructed a bridge for the exchange and communication of Eastern and Western culture.China Discourses in American Orientalism: Reading Pearl S.Buck’s Sino-American Transnational Writings, written by Zhu Hua,from the perspective of American Orientalism, comprehensively studies Buck’s writings on rural China. The source text of the translation of the report is selected from Chapter 3,“Physiocratic China and Aestheticized Discourse.” The chapter strategically selects Lu Xun’s novels to reveal Orientalism in Buck’s rural China through comparison. The book is a comprehensive interdisciplinary study of American Orientalism and Buck’s writings. The author pinpoints two characteristics of the text which bring difficulties before translation.First, the text is highly specialized with many terminologies;second, the text is full of long and complex sentences. The text belongs to academic literature,so it is essential to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the translation. However, due to differences between Chinese and English, loss of information and meaning occurs during translation. Therefore, translation compensation theory can be adopted as the guiding theory of the report, and related compensation strategies can be applied.Guided by the theory of translation compensation, the report adopts the method of case study, and summarizes compensation strategies through analysis, including generalization, amplification, intensification, and footnote. The report aims to provide some valuable references for future translation compensation applications.
