A Report On The E-C Translation Of Reykjavik Declaration 2021 And Arctic Council Strategic Plan 2021 To 2030 From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

The source texts selected for this translation practice are the Reykjavik Declaration2021 and the Arctic Strategic Plan 2021 to 2030,which are strategic Arctic governance documents that focus on the commitments made by the Arctic Council to Arctic governance and the specific implementation plans.The translation task for the strategic Arctic-related governance documents was commissioned by the China Polar Research Centre with the aim of providing background support to relevant government departments and research institutes on Arctic policy.In terms of the characteristics,the writing style of the source texts is relatively formal with rigorous and abstract diction,long and complex clauses,and strong logicality.However,short phrases,specific characters and four-character phrases,and parallelism are usually adopted in Chinese.In light of the linguistic distinctions between the source and the target language,it is crucial to maintain the coherence and logic of the target text.Due to the rigorous content of the source text,the fidelity of the target text to the source text cannot be ignored.Therefore,the main focus of this report is what translation techniques can be adopted to guarantee the aim,coherence,and fidelity of the translation.According to the purpose,coherence and fidelity of the target text,the skopos theory is selected as the guiding theory for the translation practice.Case studies are carried out from above three perspectives,and the translation techniques adopted in the translation practice are summarized in the end.The report finds that translation techniques used to achieve translation purposes are mainly repetition,change of sequences,and the reconstruction of long sentences with clauses.To achieve a coherent target text,translation techniques,including conversion,the shift of sentence components,and splitting of sentences,are used.Careful choice of words and addition of meanings beyond words are adopted to ensure the fidelity of the target texts.The report provides a reference for the future translation of formal style texts and is a guide for translators to grasp relevant translation techniques for future translation projects.
