| This practice report is based on the consecutive interpretation of a basketball training session for adolescents in Yi Camp,Guangdong.The training session was led by a Serbian coach Aleksandar Opancina.All participants were U16 basketball players.Warm-up exercises,fundamentals,tactical procedures and game practice were conducted in real time.Consecutive interpreting was chosen as the form of interpreting.According to Interpretive Theory,the process of interpreting can be divided into three parts: understanding,deverbalization and representation.In basketball interpreting,the interpreter is confronted with an overwhelming number of terminologies,idioms and short forms,that require a deep understanding of the subject of basketball;moreover,the interpreter is required to perform comprehension,deverbalization and representation,referring to basketball knowledge,the context of the speech,and the speaker’s actions,as the mostly spontaneous speeches often have deficiencies in the integrity of meaning.In this translation practice studied from the perspective of Interpretive Theory,the author established two strategies to overcome the problems: improving preparation before interpreting by learning about the subject,and compensating meaning with background knowledge,language context and speaker actions. |
