A Report On The Consecutive Interpreting For The 2019 The 2nd World Cultural Capitals Tianfu Symposium Based On Interpretive Theory

From 24 th to 27 th July,2019,21 member cities of the World Cultural Cities Forum from 42 countries worldwide,11 important node cities along the Belt and Road,more than 300 representatives of well-known cultural and creative institutions at home and abroad,and cultural celebrities all gathered together for the 2nd World Cultural Capitals Tianfu Symposium held in Chengdu,to discuss cultural development and urban opportunities.The author served as a consecutive interpreter in this symposium,mainly responsible for the consecutive interpreting work for Francois Bedard,the head of the Montreal delegation,in an interview with the media.Interpretive theory is adopted as the theoretical framework of this report.It holds that interpreting is a dynamic process,dividing translation process into three steps: the first step is understanding the meaning of the source language,the second step is deverbalization and the third step is re-expression,which aims at pursuing the equivalence of the meaning and effect of source language.This report,based on interpretive theory,focuses on analyzing the interpreting methods used in the interpreting practice,including(1)omission;(2)explanation;(3)addition;(4)conversion;(5)reconstruction and summarizing two typical difficulties the author encountered in the process of implementing the task,namely,(1)flooded information;(2)illogical expression,then proposing five corresponding strategies and suggestions:(1)analyzing the logical relation of the source language;(2)improving listening and note-taking skills;(3)information anticipation;(4)adding logical connectives;(5)reconstruction.The first,second and third strategies are proposed for tackling flooded information,and the fourth and fifth are recommended for coping with illogical expressions.This report is expected to provide certain materials and references for consecutive interpreting practice and related studies.
