Since the outbreak of COVID-19,crisis information communication in the health field has become an important part of language services in various countries. The Chinese translation of such related English texts not only helps the Chinese be informed of the development and the prevention measures of the world epidemic, but also provides reference information for Chinese readers to know the way of world communication during the pandemic. Therefore,it is extremely important to translate such related texts. This translation report is based on the author’s translation practice of the 6th and10 th papers in the social science research papers collection Language as a Social Determinant of Health: Translating and Interpreting the COVID-19 Pandemic compiled by Federico Marco Federici,a UK professor. The report analyzes and explores the application of the Functional Equivalence Theory in practical translation materials from the lexical, sentence and discourse levels with different translation methods. At the lexical level, the author focuses on the application of word meaning selection, part of speech conversion, and word meaning extension at the surface, deep, and pragmatic equivalence levels, striving to balance semantic accuracy and formal equivalence. At the sentence level, based on the theoretical framework of functional equivalence, and taking full account of the specificity of social science research papers, the author focuses on the application of direct translation, word order adjustment, and semantic reorganization at the surface, deep, and pragmatic equivalence levels, striving to achieve semantic functional equivalence between the target and the source text, while taking into account the linguistic form.At the discourse level, within the framework of the Functional Equivalence Theory, the author discusses the application of two translation strategies, namely, explicit cohesion and logical reorganization, based on three equivalence levels aforementioned,in order to achieve smooth and consistent expression in the target text, and achieve functional equivalence between the target text and the source text at the discourse level. The translation practice deepens the author’s knowledge and understanding of the text of social science research papers, the Functional Equivalence Theory, and the translation methods and strategies, which helps accumulate theoretical and practical experience for the author to engage in such related translation work in the future, and contributes indirectly to the development of the field.
