This interpreting practice is based on an online webinar initiated by Food for Sustainability Co LAB named as Carbon Sequestration,a Theoretical Session.Since more cutting-edge scholars cast the spotlight on agriculture and regard farmland as a new place for carbon sequestration, the participants in this webinar are from ecological and agricultural realms.During this practice, the interpreter noticed the guest speakers basically delivered impromptu speech with quite colloquial languages, typical of redundancy, unclear information, loose logics, mixed sentence, causing logics with casual, adversative, climax, conditional and explanation relations hidden in words, phrases and sentences. However, the high pursuit of a clear text in science English, the limited cognitive load of interpreters and the immediate feature of interpreting all require the interpreter to fully explicitize the implicit logic. Thus, how to address implicit logic has served as a pivotal problem for this practice. The interpreter analyzed the implicit logic happening in the text from three aspects: firstly, absence of logical marks in meaning, cohesion and grammar;secondly, logical relation vagueness in words, phrases and sentences;lastly, unclear logical tiers and focus. To solve different types of implicit logic, guided by explicitation theory, the interpreter flexibly adopted interpreting skills including variation, particularization, adding logic connectives and tier marks, cutting sentences and changing sentence order to explicitize the implicit logic, ultimately saving the interpreter’s energy for listening, structuring notes and production.By summarizing the explicitation strategy for implicit logic when interpreting impromptu speech in this report, the writer expects to enrich the research and practice fruits in the realm and provide references for other interpreters to address similar logical problems, finally achieving better interpreting results.
