| Impromptu speeches are a common type of speech, featuring loose logic, ambiguous structure, vague expressions, duplication and redundancy.Due to characteristics of impromptu speeches and linguistic and sociocultural differences between Chinese and English,it is important for interpreters to explicitate the speaker’s original message during the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation. In this mock conference, the author failed to explicitate the conceptual meaning, textual meaning and interpersonal meaning of the source language. The author therefore carries out a case analysis on the lack of explicitation and concludes the reasons behind it,including lack of background information, inadequate listening comprehension, lack of awareness in explicitating logic and key messages and ignoring the communicative nature of interpretation. Moreover, this thesis offers five strategies to make the translation more explicit,i.e.,improving background knowledge, enhancing listening comprehension, making the logic clear, identifying key message and clarifying the speaker’s interpersonal intention. |
