Taking Hyland’s classification of stance markers as the main framework, and by using the Corpus of English Translation of Chinese Diplomatic Discourse with reference to the Corpus of British Diplomatic Discourse, this study examines the application characteristics of four types of stance markers in Chinese diplomatic discourse. The research finds that self-mention markers account for the highest proportion of stance markers in China’s diplomatic discourse, followed by hedges and boosters, and attitude markers account for the lowest proportion.Hedges and boosters are used significantly more frequently in Chinese diplomatic discourse than in British diplomatic discourse, while the frequencies of attitude markers and self-mention markers in Chinese diplomatic discourse are significantly lower than those in British diplomatic discourse. This shows that Chinese diplomatic discourse conveys information as a point of view more frequently, making information transmission more persuasive and easier to be accepted by readers.Besides,Chinese diplomatic discourse has more factual content and the author has a stronger affirmative attitude towards the discourse, which can make diplomatic discourse contain more facts and proofs, and greatly enhance the credibility and firmness of the discourse.Chinese diplomatic discourse relatively shows less the author’s emotion and attitude and seldom uses the first-person perspective to convey information, which can make the discourse more objective, serious, authoritative and firm, and make the discourse more representative of the country’s stance and emphasize that diplomatic activities are initiated by the country as a whole. The research suggests that the application strategies and translation of stance markers are mainly related to diplomatic policy, cultural tradition and the particularity of diplomatic discourse.
