| As China continues to improve the level of opening-up to the outside world,an increasing number of foreign food manufacturers have set up factories in the country.Given that foods are daily essential commodities for consumers,the standardization,safety,and quality thereof have always been a focus of China’s legislation.However,in production practice,foreign food manufacturers often find that the corresponding Chinese laws and regulations applicable to their products are usually without reliable English translations,or,if any,the translations are normally in poor quality.Among the translated texts,food terms see the largest number of mistranslations.Through practice,the author finds that these errors mainly include: mistranslation of food terms into common nouns,polysemy of a single term,Chinese unique terms without existing translations,etc.Therefore,based on some mainland food laws and regulations,the author extracts several typical cases,from which the error types and solutions are given.Under the guidance of the term translation theory of general terminology,the thesis puts forward some countermeasures,namely: searching for translations by selecting dependable information sources,creating translations based on contexts,and integrating relevant terms with mind mapping.It has been proved in practice that the strategies above can effectively improve the quality of Chinese food term translation and the efficiency of translators,and help avoid translation errors that may hinder food production.The author hopes that this study helps translators in the field to optimize their translations and make constructive contributions to the English translation of food regulations in Chinese Mainland. |
