| Self-repair in interpreting is inevitable. As the goal of interpreting is to accurately and fluently convey the speaker’s message to the audience, appropriate self-repair can improve the accuracy of communication. However, excessive self-repair might reduce the fluency of interpreting, diminishing the listening experience and audience’ trust in interpreters. The thesis adopts a webinar named How to Control Health Care Costs_Lessons from Abroad hosted by the Brookings Institution as the case for analysis.Self-repairs in the interpreting of this webinar can be divided into five categories: errorrepairs,precision-repairs,explicitness-repairs,synonymy-repairs,and restartingrepairs. The thesis analyzes the causes of self-repairs and strategies to reduce selfrepairs. The study finds out that there are three aspects of factors that cause self-repairs in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting: inter-language,intra-language,and extralanguage.Inter-language factors include inadequate listening skills and failure to deverbalize.Intra-language factors include influence from a mother-tongue dialect and excessively constant refrains.Extra-language factors include poor pre-interpreting preparation and perfectionism. To reduce self-repairs,in the inter-language aspect, interpreters should improve listening skills and deverbalization. In the intra-language aspect, interpreters should practice Mandarin more and reduce constant refrains. In the extra-language aspect, interpreters should prepare better and avoid being perfectionists. |
