Disfluency In Spanish-chinese Consecutive Interpretation And Coping Strategies

Disfluency is a prevalent phenomenon in spoken language.In consecutive interpreting,disfluency in the interpretation affects the audience’s rating of the overall quality of the interpretation as well as causing the audience to question the accuracy of the message and the professionalism of the interpreter.Moreover,the language output of interpreting involves bilingual conversion,and is very time-sensitive,with the interpreter having to deal with interpreting techniques such as note taking.As a result,the causes of disfluency in consecutive interpreting are more complex than those of natural language speaking,hence improvements are more difficult to make.This paper takes as an example a mock conference on the speech of the Mexican Minister of Economy,Tatiana Cloutier,at the forum "The New Economy and the Future of Small and Medium Enterprises".With the help of Levelt’s language output model,the author uses bibliography,comparative analysis and inductive methods to analyse the mock conference based on the recorded and transcribed texts of the source and translated languages,following the procedure of consecutive interpreting.The author suggests that the causes of disfluency in consecutive interpreting may include inadequate listening and recognition skills,inappropriate note-taking strategies and poor bilingual conversion skills,which can be improved in three ways accordingly: first,focusing on daily accumulation,enhancing practice of numbers and practising long sentences to strengthen listening and recognition skills;second,optimizing note-taking strategies,being wary of redundancy in note-taking and reducing the amount of energy taken up by note-taking;third,improving flexibility of expression through paraphrasing practice.
