In consecutive interpretation, the fluency of the target language is an important aspect of evaluating the quality of interpretation.Improper pauses in interpretation will reduce the fluency of the interpretation,so interpreters should try to avoid them in the process of interpretation. This article conducts a case study on the author’s interpretation of the speech of Alicia Bárcena,Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean,on the mock conference of The Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2021,to analyze the improper pauses in this case.First, based on the existing studies on improper pauses, the author defines improper pauses and classifies improper pauses into un-filled improper pauses and filled improper pauses which include fillers, repetition and false starts. Then, the author analyzes and summarizes four causes of improper pauses as following: inadequate pre-interpretation preparation, listening and comprehension difficulty in long and difficult sentences, inefficient note-taking and tardiness of expressing in target language. In response to the four reasons, strategies can be used to prevent or at least reduce improper pauses: improve preinterpretation preparation, listening and comprehension ability,note-taking system and bilingual conversion ability.
