Chinese calligraphy is a cultural product accumulated by the Chinese nation for thousands of years, and is a traditional cultural skill relied on by the traditional scholars. As the main body of calligraphy writing, based on the background of social development, the taxi class endows calligraphy with cultural meaning and characteristics of the times, making it a real art, constantly innovating, developing and inheriting endlessly.Ancient calligraphy education is not "specialized learning",but embedded in the entire social and cultural system, with the scholar class as the cultural subject, relying on ancient classics, subtly improving the level of calligraphy, for the "Taoist and instrumental" calligraphy education. However, since the abolition of the imperial examination system in 1905,the scholar class has tended to disintegrate, calligraphy and its education and tradition have been broken, and the "Tao" and "instrument" have begun to separate, and the audience has been greatly reduced, losing the main body of inheritance. After entering modern society,Western modern civilization has further impacted the development of calligraphy and education, making it fall into the embarrassing situation of "no one cares".How can the "new life" of calligraphy and education be realized? This study adopts the research paradigm of personal life history, and takes Teacher X,a folk calligraphy educator who grew up under the influence of the traditional calligraphy education model of scholars,as the research object, and uses his life course and calligraphy education practice as clues, and conducts research by combining observation and interviews. The first part,by presenting the life experience, educational experience, and professional experience of the research subjects, reflects the dilemma of separation of "Tao" and "instrument" and conflict between tradition and reality encountered in calligraphy and education after the decline of the modern scholar class. The second part reveals the subjects’ persistence and adherence to the concept of traditional calligraphy, the embodiment of traditional calligraphy, and the traditional writing life under the dilemma, reflecting their firm belief and sense of social responsibility as the inheritors of calligraphy. The third part analyzes the psychological state of the research subjects in the current social context of the torment and struggle between "businessman" and "teacher","self-cultivation" and "test taking",and has the intention and practical efforts to try to bridge the gap between the first two,and painstakingly maintain the "fragile" community of calligraphy. The fourth part, combined with the above, analyzes the reasons for calligraphy and its difficulties in modern times, mainly in the three aspects of the disintegration of the modern scholar class and the disappearance of the calligraphy inheritance community, the "separation of Taoist instruments" and the rupture of self-cultivation tradition, the impact of modernity and the loss of tradition. The fifth part discusses the cultural function and educational value of calligraphy and its inheritance, and explains that the new life and circulation path of calligraphy and its education lies in three aspects: rebuilding the cultural community of calligraphy and its inheritance, returning to the philosophy of calligraphy of "Taoist and instrumental unity",and constructing a trendy neoclassical lifestyle. In the concluding part, the shortcomings and prospects of this research are briefly introduced. To sum up,this study adopts the research paradigm of personal life history, attempts to start from the life course of "little people" and the teaching practice of calligraphy education, reveals the reasons for the "loss" of Chinese calligraphy under the background of modern social changes, expounds the endogenous cultural meaning and educational value of calligraphy, and explores the possibility and practical path of linking traditional and modern education between calligraphy and calligraphy education in the process of national cultural rejuvenation.
