In recent years,the topic of "death" has aroused deep concern among the public due to war,epidemics and other factors.When our loved ones and friends are struggling helplessly with illnesses,when life becomes impermanent,when our kind suffer persecution......,when people see these scenes and reflect,all these things happen to become an opportunity for people to ask the value of life and the meaning of death.Contemporary artists are constantly creating works on the subject of "death",and the awakening of artists to death is a continuous development process.Through the research,we find that printmaking artists often use "death" as a creative theme,spreading their attitude and exploration of death to the public,and compared to other types of paintings,printmaking’s interpretation of death is more interesting and convenient for people to read and circulate.The core of this thesis lies in the study of the interpretation of the concept of death in printmaking and the way of forming the view of death expressed by contemporary printmakers.This paper is divided into four parts,the first part mainly analyzes the views of the Eastern and Western philosophies of death and their differences;the second part takes the history of the development of Western printmaking(medieval toneoclassical)as the route to sort out and organize the views of death;the third part is the core of this paper,which mainly explores the views of death expressed by contemporary artists.The third part is the core of the paper,which focuses on the views of death expressed by modern and contemporary artists.The second and third parts are the author’s selection of representative artists for individual case analysis;the fourth part compares the Western philosophy of death and draws a conclusion,namely: Western artists used to express the tragedy of fate through death and convey some kind of religious admonition to people;while contemporary artists are pursuing a special visual language through death-related themes,such as tragedy,despair,decadence,etc.,from which we can draw the conclusion that Western artists’ personal The awakening of Western artists’ personal concept of death and its development.In terms of literature,domestic papers basically focus on the study of the aesthetics of death of artists,which is linked to the aesthetics of death according to the artists’ artworks,and further additions are needed in terms of the artists’ exploration of death in different periods and contemporary artists’ demonstration of the awakening of death in individuals and the changes of the concept of death.This paper will sort out the artists and their works that represent the subject of death in each important period of Western art history,link their works to the philosophy of death and the aesthetics of death,show the evolution of the subject of death in the change of art,the change of the artist’s attitude toward death,and study the uniqueness of the printmaking art to the concept of death to show the viewpoint of death in the major subject of death.
