In this report, the reporter selects Chapters Two and Three of Mr.Chen Zhongshi’s novella,The Story of Mr.Lanpao—Mr.Lanpao and Inner Demons as the source text.As the starting point of this novella first published in early 1986,“the blue robe” carries its symbolic meaning with the creation of a vivid character image, like a shackle put on the hero, representing the feudal ethical code, and the novella mainly narrates the story of XüShenxing’s miserable life.Based on the language characteristics of Chinese literary novel, the reporter,to create a better reading experience for the target readers, explores the English translation strategies and methods of the figures of speech, reproducing their stylistic effects, and with typical examples, comprehensively reviews, describes, analyzes and summarizes the translation process and difficulties the reporter has mainly encountered in translating the two chapters.More specifically, the reporter, according to Peter Newmark’s text typology, first analyzes the text type of the selected text in detail, and then generalizes the linguistic features of the source text,so that the deconstruction translation theory is to be adopted to help the forthcoming translation practice and its analytic report writing. In addition, the reporter briefly introduces Derrida’s “la différence”,“supplément” and Venuti’s “foreignization translation”.With this in mind, the reporter, through case studies on rhetoric, mainly discusses and analyzes three types of translation difficulty in aesthetic rhetoric, namely, lexical rhetoric, structural rhetoric and phonological rhetoric.Specifically, lexical rhetorical devices include simile, personification and metonymy;structural rhetorical devices include contrast and parallelism;phonological rhetorical devices refer to diphonic words, reduplicated words and onomatopoeic words. The reporter also analyzes the application of such translation methods in translation practice as “pragmatic extension”,“conversion”,“amplification”,“adjusting the word order”,“explicit cohesion”,“literal translation” and“imitating English alliteration”.It’s a report with four parts.Part One is an introduction to the background, objective and significance of this translation project as well as the structure and key points of this report. In Part Two,the reporter describes the translation process, including preparation before translation, translation process and post-translation.Part Three is case study,in which the reporter, under the guidance of deconstruction theory, uses the principles of “la différence”,“supplément” and “foreignization translation” to analyze the C-E translation transformation and its stylistic effect of the rhetorical devices in the source text. The last part summarizes the translator’s gains and limitations along with some preliminary ideas for improvement. With this report, the reporter hopes to provide some reference for the later translation studies on the same or similar literature, and let readers from different cultures readily learn more about Shaanxi local customs and practices with the help of English versions of this novella.
