As an important representative of Italian aesthetics and art theory,Umberto Eco has achieved a lot, ranging from art criticism to semiotics to novel creation.Among them,The Open Work Theory is particularly typical. In a sense,The Open Work Theory plays an important role in Eco’s entire academic career, and is the commanding theory of Eco’s overall ideological theory and creative practice. All aspects of Eco’s thought and practice are permeated with the openness of The Open Work Theory, that is,the openness that advocates the interaction between creators, works and receivers.According to this, this thesis mainly divides the research content into four chapters. While analyzing the internal theory and comparing the external theory of The Open Work Theory,it also compares the theory with Eco’s practice on the history of aesthetic concepts, with a view to making a more thorough and comprehensive understanding of the theory, and then to Eco’s entire ideological and theoretical system and practical achievements. The first chapter mainly introduces The Open Work Theory itself, and combs the theory internally from three angles of art creation, art work and art acceptance to clarify the connotation of The Open Work Theory; The second chapter compares his semiotic theory with his aesthetic theory, explain the influence of the former on the latter and the development of the latter on the former; The third chapter takes Eco’s hermeneutics theory as the main content, puts The Open Work Theory into Eco’s hermeneutics theory, discusses the theory with the problem of the limit of interpretation, and explains the thinking of the limit of interpretation contained in the theory; The fourth chapter breaks away from Eco’s theoretical works, and viewing The Open Work Theory from His Practice of Art History and Aesthetic Concept History, analyzes the actual impact and significance of this theory on Eco’s art practice, and further reaffirms its core position in Eco’s academic achievements. In general,The Open Work Theory is the product of post-modern society and art circles. It has the rationality of symbiosis and coexistence with post-modern art,and also has an important guiding role in guiding post-modern art from creation to acceptance. The study of The Open Work Theory is of great significance to both the exploration of art forms and the thinking of the future development direction of art.
