American sinologist Howard Goldblatt is known as “the first person to translate Chinese literary works into English” and the “chief midwife” who helped Chinese contemporary literature move towards the world.With Mo Yan winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2012,Howard Goldblatt,as Mo Yan’s “imperial translator”,has also received widespread and sustained attention.However,previous studies on Howard Goldblatt have mostly focused on his translation strategies and achievements in Chinese literature from the perspective of literary translation and communication,while few have examined his Chinese learning experience as a successful “Chinese talent” from the perspective of international Chinese education.Howard Goldblatt reviewed his personal Chinese learning experience and emphasized the important role of “recitation” on multiple occasions.Of course,recitation is not the only reason why Howard Goldblatt became a famous sinologist,but it is a very important method that has been used throughout his career from beginner to advanced learner.Recitation is increasingly receiving attention from the international Chinese language education community.Based on Howard Goldblatt’s learning experience,this article explores the specific practice of recitation at various stages of his Chinese language learning through collating the content related to recitation in his autobiography and interviews,and examines what and how to recite,as well as any implications.And dialectically view his experience in the light of the current characteristics of international Chinese language education.This article conducts a textual analysis of Howard Goldblatt’s autobiography,interviews,essays,and other materials,and examines Howard Goldblatt’s Chinese learning experience as a case study.The full text consists of six chapters.The first chapter is an introduction,which mainly introduces the reasons for choosing this topic,its significance,and the current research situation.The second chapter,from the perspective of teaching Chinese as a second language,specifically expounds the connotation of language sense cultivation theory,input hypothesis theory,and cognitive psychological model theory,proving the feasibility of the application of recitation teaching method to teaching Chinese as a foreign language,and providing theoretical support for the text analysis below.Chapter Three is a case study focusing on Howard Goldblatt’s Chinese learning experience.Through collating the content of his autobiography and interviews related to the method of recitation,it is concluded that the combination of recitation and training in reading,writing,and oral expression,from beginner’s reading materials to Tang and Song poetry to classical prose,has played a unique role in understanding the characteristics of Chinese language,improving the level of Chinese language,enhancing the sense of Chinese language,and enhancing the understanding of Chinese culture.The fourth chapter analyzes the current application of recitation based on current teaching practice.Chapter five proposes specific strategies for the application of reading teaching methods from the perspectives of textbooks,teachers,and teaching methods.Because Howard Goldblatt’s Chinese learning experience has its own characteristics of the times,the materials and methods of recitation are not entirely suitable for today’s international Chinese education.For example,recitation of elementary reading materials such as the Three Character Classic may not be suitable for beginner Chinese learners,and their experience needs to be treated dialectically.The final conclusion is a summary of the main points and conclusions of the full text.
