| Mo Yan,the first Chinese writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature,gained popularity among Chinese readers for his early work《红高粱家族》(Honggaoliang Jiazu,entitled Red Sorghum)due to its intricate narrative,magical color,and critical style.The English translation of the work by Howard Goldblatt,a Sinologist and translator,triggered a violent response among English-speaking readers in 1993,and it was unique in terms of accuracy,literariness,and artistry and successfully broke the downturn of "going out" of Chinese literary works.This study examines the translation of Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum by Goldblatt and its acceptance among English-speaking readers.Based on the "5W" communication model,the study discusses the accuracy,literature,and artistry of the translation from five dimensions of communication.Quantitative data analysis of foreign book review websites(www.goodreads.com)from 2007 to 2021 is presented,including star ratings,attention thames,theme word clouds,and popular comments.Baidu AI is used to quantify readers’ positive,negative and neutral attitude.Selected high-impact review texts are subjected to qualitative research to explore readers’ emotional attitudes and evaluations.The study aims to provide insight for the acceptance of translated works in the English-speaking world,focusing on both the subject of translation and the content of translation. |
