| Popular science texts about psychology play an important role in spreading and popularizing psychological knowledge, which not only have the characteristics of scientific rigor, but also are close to our lives. With the continuous development of China’s economy, people become increasingly stressed, which often causes a series of mental health problems. Therefore, the popularization and dissemination of psychological knowledge have become more important. In view of this, this translation practice report takes the English-Chinese translation in the first part of Dana Fennell’s popular science book about psychology,The World of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder The Experiences of Living with OCD(2022),as the research object, describes and analyzes the application of explicitation strategy in the translation practice of psychological popular science texts, systematically summarizes relevant translation solutions and then explores the rules of translating such texts, intending to promote the translation and dissemination of psychological knowledge in China.Explicitation refers to clearly explaining the information implied in the source language but inferable from the context or situation in the target language. There are a lot of implicit and vague contents in the popular science texts about psychology, which will hinder readers’ reading if not explicitly translated.Klaudy(2009: 106-107),a Hungarian scholar, proposes four types of explicitation: obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation, pragmatic explicitation and translation-inherent explicitation, which means that she analyzes and explains the causes of explicitation more systematically.According to this, combining the text features of popular science works in this practice, the study takes the first three categories of explicitation proposed by Klaudy as the theoretical basis, expounds the difficulties encountered in translation and systematically explores The World of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder The Experiences of Living with OCD in English-Chinese translation practice through a large number of representative case studies,so as to sort out and summarize the translation rules to improve the semantic clarity and readability of the translation. The study finds a lot of implicit information in popular science texts, such as professional knowledge, implicit content in the context and indefinite pronouns.Under the guidance of Klaudy’s first three explicitation strategies, the translator can use different solutions to solve the translation difficulties encountered at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. At the lexical level, under the guidance of the obligatory explicitation strategy, the translator uses paraphrase to solve the translation of the meaning of common words in the context;Under the guidance of the pragmatic explicitation strategy, the annotation and shift are respectively used to deal with the implicitness in professional items and implicitness in cultural items. At the syntactic level, under the guidance of the optional explicitation strategy, the translator uses structural reorganization combined with sequence and reverse order to solve the long and difficult sentences and uses the change of voices to deal with the implicitness in the aspect of passive voice. At the textual level, under the guidance of the obligatory explicitation strategy, the translator uses the solution of clarity of references to deal with the implicitness in references;Under the guidance of the optional explicitation strategy, the translator uses the addition of linking expressions to deal with the implicitness in textual coherence. |
