Capsizing of Roll-on/Roll-off Vehicle Carrier Golden Ray,a maritime text published by the National Transportation Safety Board of the United States,includes factual information,analysis,conclusions,recommendations etc...Such reports assist people in figuring out causes of the accident and learning lessons and proper translation of these reports becomes a matter of significance.It is found out in translation process that there is frequent occurrence of various post attributives,which is closely related to the accurate transmission of information.Thus,accurate translation of these post attributives is an issue worthy of examination.Under the guidance of New Mark’s Text Typology,this report intends to explore techniques of translating these post attributives in the Capsizing of Roll-on/Roll-off Vehicle Carrier Golden Ray.Newmark maintained that the analysis of text type was a prerequisite for translation.The report is a summary of the Golden Ray’s accident investigation,which is an informative text according to the Text Typology.Information text emphasizes the information conveyance in an accurate and objective way,consistent with basic requirements of the communicative translation.Therefore,the technique is mainly adopted to analyze methods of translating post attributives.As a result,five techniques including prepositioning,blending,dividing,conversing and the mixed approach are applied and generalized in this translation task.These techniques make it more possible to achieve better information transmission in Chinese as the target language.This translation report verifies the applicability of the Text Typology to the translation of post attributives.The result provides a useful reference for the research of translating post attributives as well as the translation of other maritime texts.
