A Case Study On Simultaneous Interpreting Strategies From The Perspective Of Effort Model

In the context of globalization,China’s role in the international community is becoming increasingly important,and our economic,political,and cultural exchanges with countries around the world are becoming increasingly close.At the same time,some disharmonious voices such as the "China threat theory" have also emerged,deepening the misunderstanding of China among Western people.Therefore,the foreign minister’s press conference is particularly important,and the information conveyed at the conference has gradually become one of the important windows for people from all walks of life around the world to understand China.The political nature of the text of the Foreign Minister’s press conference determines that the biggest difficulty in simultaneous interpreting of the press conference is how to effectively communicate and disseminate information with people living in different systems,cultures,customs,and language backgrounds,in order to achieve the expected results.This thesis will briefly introduce the current research status of simultaneous interpreting and the Effort Model both domestically and internationally.Taking the bilingual materials of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s press conference in 2022 as the research material,it will analyze the strategies of simultaneous interpreting from the perspective of Gile’s Effort Model,hoping to provide reference for others’ researches in this field,and better meet the urgent needs of China’s international publicity work and its building of national image.The thesis has found that interpreters need to grasp the reality of China’s development,the needs of foreign audiences for Chinese information,and the thinking habits of foreign audiences.While pursuing faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance and adhering to partial literal translation,interpreting practitioners should grasp various factors in the interpreting of political texts such as foreign ministers’ press conferences,and flexibly use simultaneous interpreting strategies such as prediction,concision and omission,explanation and paraphrase of expression with Chinese characteristics.Besides,they need to fully consider the cultural differences between China and the West,strive to bridge the cultural divide,to show the positive image of the country to the greatest extent possible.
