About 85% of the sea fishing catch is low-value small fish, which is not suitable for human food because of its drawbacks, and usually used as feedstuffs or discarded directly as waste. Thus natural resources are wasted. The paper aims at development and utilization of ocean regenerative resource by using a kind of low-value small fish as raw material. Research work has been done in the processing of the small fish hoping to find biological active substances, which will be beneficial to the development of oceanic pharmaceutics and functional sea food.Enzymatic hydrolysis has been adopted to recover the fish muscle protein and the technological factors such as material ratio, hydrolysis temperature and reaction time have been determined. The main components of the enzymatic hydrolysate are nitrogen-containing substances, which are mixtures mainly composed of polypeptides with smaller quantity of free amino acids and account for 91.0% of the solid matter. The product contains high quantities of 8 essential amino acids adding up to 41.5% of the total amino acids, among which the content of lysine is 8.6%. Therefore the product is rich in nutrition.Directed by the biological activity the enzymatic hydrolysate has been successfully separated and purified into three components in pilot test scale by ion exchange technology. For the first time peptides with such a kind of biological activity has been testified in vivo hi the low-value fish hydrolysate, especially in fraction Fl. The activity effect of fraction Fl approaches the experimental control. The plentiful low value raw material in natural resources, the non-pollution technology adopted in the study, the target components without side-effects, and the distinct activity all make it prospective to develop oceanic pharmaceutics and functional sea food from this small fish.Mineral elements are found to have no clear relationship with the biological activity. Large quantity of arginine, lysine and proline as well as small amount of glutamic acid and asparagic acid are found in the biological active peptides by amino acid analysis. The amount of free glycine, arginine, methionine and lysine are relative to the biological activity.Reversed phase high performance chromatography (RP-HPLC) is used to analyze the peptide map of the experimental samples. Fine linear interrelationship has been found between the areas of four chromatographic peaks and biological activity effect which suggests the bio-active components are possibly within the four peaks. Meanwhile the bio-active fraction Fl has been relatively enriched with these four peaks. These results provide the direction for further purification of the active components.
