Apolipoprotein AI (apoAI) is the main protein component (70%) of high density lipoprotein ( HDL). Data from various epidemiological studies have shown that plasma HDL and apoAI levels are inversely relating to the incidence of coronary heart disease. ApoAI plays important roles in the process of reverse cholesterol transport, lipid metabolism and antiatherosclerosis.Beijing duck (BD) and tree shrew (TS) have been discovered by Wang KQ and She MP et al to be the two good models for the studying antiatherogeniety of HDL. The animals have plentiful plasma HDL and their apoAI with higher lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase ( LCAT ) activity and much lower CETP activity than those of human. The animals were proved to be insusceptible to atherosclerosis even after a long term of feeding with high lipid food. Recently the primary structure of BD apolipoprotein AI has been determined in collaboration with Yang CY. et al. However, the gene structures of BD, TS apoAI, and other apolipoproteins have not been studied.
