Construction of digital city is in the ascendant. Digital city is a systemic engineering, and construction of it will experience phases of foundation construction, inter-unite and inter-communicate, according-to-need service. Information about the spatial entities over ground, on the ground and under the ground need to be acquired and visualized so as to accomplish the task in phase of foundation construction, which the current construction of digital city is experiencing in our point of view. Meanwhile, cities suffering from earthquake, ground subsidence, groundwater pollution, soil pollution, landslide and karsts-rock subsidence et al because of different geological zones they are located on. Some geological disaster can't be prevented or reversed; Some can be reduced or prevented. For this reason, great effort are being made in many cities to reduce or even to prevent the disaster. Moreover geologic issues are impenetrate in many fields such as city construction project, subterranean project, water and electricity project, traffic project, environment project and exploitation of resource. All the work and the issues mentioned above must get done in virtue of 3D urban geological information visualization technology. Researches were consequently carried out to provide real 3D urban digital scene for the public, advantageous tools for geologist, urban-geological-information-basing basic and value-added information service for sake of common needs, government planning and decision, and in an attempt to promote the progress of theories in point.Based on the author's work in the task of visualization and modeling the 3D quatemary and construction frame in the object region and the ponderation of the author on 3D visualization, the topic of 3D urban geological information visualization is probed into on the chance of throwing out a minnow to catch a whale. The task is a part of the work, named active fault Exploration and seismic hazard assessment of Hanzhou city, of Hanzhou science & Technology Administration and Hanzhou Eathquake Administration.The topic of 3D visualization of urban geological information covers not only the acquisition, processing and visualization of data, but the development of corresponding software tools.
