The composition, structure and reactivity of coal has been a very important issue in coal science, which has been the foundation for optimizing existing coal processing and conversion technologies and developing new technologies. Modem coal chemical engineering technologies would heavily depend on the understanding of coal itself. A lot of research work has been conducted in this area in the past decades. But the achievements are not satisfactory because of the complexity of coal. Would the research be fruitful only if the research has been conducted with the combination of coal resources and the characterization of coal. This research, focused on the coal composition, structure and reactivity, was done on the basis of Chinese coal resources. There are three sections in this dissertation, Section I , Section II and Sectionlll. Section I is the core of the whole paper, the main content of this section is "Characteristics and conversion behavior of Dongsheng-shenfu coal" Section II (Appendixl) is "Petrographical Characteristics of Chinese Steam Coal" Sectionm (Chapter6) is the summary and perspective of the whole paper. Section I and Section II has some relationship in context. Section II (Appendixl) the background or reference of Section I in a sense. The title of the first chapter is "Status of Coal Characterization" In fact, this part is the literature review. Generalization, problems and the highlights for the future study in coal characterization research are summarized on the basis of careful literature reviews. "Macro-coal characterization" which means the research of coal on proximate, ultimate analysis etc, "Micro-coal characterization" which means the research of coal petrology, and "the composition, structure of coal"are composed of the main content of coal characterization. The main content is "Characterization of Dongsheng-shenfu coal"in Chapter 2. Dongsheng-shenfu coal is characterized with "Four High"high calorific value, high moisture content, high inertinite content and CaO contents) and "Four Low"low ash, low sulfur, low phosphorus and low ash fusion) on the collection and assessment of coal analysis data of the coal. The effect of this "Four High"and "Four Low"on the utilization of the coal was also discussed here. Chapter 3 is "Characteristics of Majjiata coal and its macerals" A coal sample is selected from coal seamY of Majiata coal mine on the basis of analysis and assessment of Dongsheng-shenfu coal characteristics. The research on coal petrology, maceral separation, physical property determination and the structure of parent coal and its enriched macerals are conducted. The maceral compositions of Majiata coal are very simple. Vitrinite and inertinite are main components and exinite is very rare. The microlithotypes of Majiata coal are also relatively simple. Vitrite, inertite and vitrinertite are taking the dominant position, and dante and durite occur rarely. The combination of centrifugal separation and hand pick up provides a very efficient mean for the separation of coal macerals with relatively high purity. The elemental composition, specific surface areas and structure parameters of vitrinite are significantly different from inertinite. The structure of parent Majiata coal should be the comprehensive combination of vitrinite and inertinite.
