To reduce the high cost for preparation of polyamide-6/clay nanocomposites and overcome a decrease in the toughness of the nanocomposites, in this work, we have developed a novel route with low cost to prepare polyamide 6/rubber/unmodified clay nanocomposites. In this process, a new compound powder of ultra-fine full-vulcanized powdered rubber/montmorillonite (UFPRM) was firstly prepared on basis of rubber latex and clay slurry. The polyamide 6/rubber/unmodified clay nanocomposites were prepared by blending UFPRM and polyamide 6 with using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. The rubber in the nanocomposites is a kind of ultra-fine full-vulcanized powdered rubber (UFPR) with special structure. In this thesis, based on three compound powders of UFPRM, butadiene styrene vinyl-pyridine UFPRM (VP-UFPRM), silicone UFPRM (S-UFPRM) and acrylate UFPRM (A-UFPRM), we prepared polyamide 6/VP-UFPRM, polyamide 6/S-UFPRM and polyamide 6/A-UFPRM nanocomposites respectively. Microscopic morphologies of polyamide 6/UFPRM nanocomposites indicated that UFPR particles were well dispersed in polyamide 6 (nylon-6), and the unmodified clay was exfoliated in the matrix among the UFPR particles.It was found that nylon-6/UFPRM nanocomposites exhibited not only high toughness, high stiffness and high heat resistance, but also reduced flammability. Further research suggested that the different nylon-6/UFPRM nanocomposites at same loading of UFPRM had similar stiffness and heat resistance. However, due to UFPRMs consisting of the different UFPRs, the three nylon-6 nanocomposites had different superior properties. Nylon-6/VP-UFPRM nanocomposites showed much higher toughness. Nylon-6/S-UFPRM nanocomposites exhibited superior flame retardance, good flowability and high thermal stability.
