In recent years, polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites have attracted great interest, because they often exhibit remarkable improvement in materials properties, but manypractical and theoretical problems desiderated to solve. The exfoliated structure is the mostinteresting because of the greater clay–polymer interaction, which makes the entire surface ofthe clay available to a polymer. But the desirable exfoliated morphology in rubber matrix isdifficult to achieve by the conventional methods. How to achieve the dispersion of nano clay layers in rubber matrix and improve theinterfacial interaction between the matrix and clay is a key issue for rubber/claynanocomposites.In this project, we put forward the use of a novel strategy to synthesize rubber/claynanocomposite by swollen orgnomontmorillonite and shearing mixed with rubber. The typeand dosage of solvent, the type of organic clay are studied, all these factors have certaininfluence on micro-structures of the rubber/clay nanocomposites. Consequently, optimizingthe technical performancesit, we can obtain some guidelines to achieve the desiredmorphology (exfoliated structure) in the case of rubber/clay nanocomposites, all these are ofgreat importance in guiding their exploitation and applications in industry. The experimental results show that: for different kinds of rubber, different types of clayand different content of clay, the expansion method is applicable, the mechanical propertiesand microstructure of rubber/clay nanocomposites are prepared by the new method aresuperior to the melt method, clay fill the number of copies, respectively, for 5 phr, 10phr and15phr tensile strength were increased by 508%, 789% and 515%, show the feasibility andadvantages of expansion method. the same amount of acrylic containing p-bond than n-butanolto swollen organic clay to prepare better micro-structure morphology and mechanicalperformance; In test range, when organic clay and n-buoh for 1 g: 4 mL , when organic clay and acrylic for 1 g: 1 mL , nanocomposite reach best micro-structure morphology andmechanical performance, so the solvent need to optimization and control; the melt methodand the expansion method have different effect extent for different starting the lamellarspacing of organic clay. The smaller of the beginning of the lamellar spacing, the moreexcellent. All these study results will provide the theory and scientific grounding, and will promoteindustrial application for rubber/clay nanocomposites.
