Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) is a very powerful new technique. Because of its high resolution and sensitivity, it is especially suitable for the separation and identification of analytes in complex samples. In this thesis, a novel modulator based on CO2 and corresponding data process methods have been investigated.Firstly, a purification and transmission system was established to make use of technical-grade gaseous CO2 instead of high-purity liquid CO2 in GCxGC. A new homemade double layer CO2 jet was designed to obtain better frigorific effect and prevent the formation of ice. With a lower consumption of liquid CO2 (<2ml/min), the cold zone could be cooled to -70℃.Using the double layer jet, a single CO2 / heated-air jet (loop) modulator was developed. Focusing and remobilization of the fractions is very efficient, the bandwidths of reinjected pulses were less than 10ms. GC×GC with this modulator was suitable to analysis of samples with the boiling range from 80-350℃, which was better than other modulators using liquid CO2 as the cold source.
