Coal is an abundant fossil energy in the world, and is used as a reliable and cheap energy source to produce electricity or syngas. However, the utilization of coal had led to the serious environmental problems, such as emissions of greenhouse gases, oxides of nitrogen and oxides of sulphur. NOX (NO and NO2) is among the most important air pollutants, it contributes to the formation of acid rain and photochemical smog. N2O can destruct ozone. So, a new technology for coal utilization with less release of NOX is demanded urgently.The development of clean coal utilization technologies has required deeper understanding of mechnism of NOX formation. However, the mechanism by which coal-N is converted into NOX is imperfectly understood at present. There have been a lot of disagreements reported in literature, especially for the formation of NH3.
