The studies of inorganic pollutants formation (such as CO2, SO2, NO-x) from combustion have been carried out since long time. The emission limits of these pollutants have been already established. However, the organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from combustion of fossil fuel (coal, biomass, petroleum etc.), have attracted people's great concern because of their carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics. At present, the understanding of the PAHs formation from combustion processes is not well known. The influence of combustion mode, operating conditions on the PAHs formation is not clear.Coal is the main primary energy in our country. Nearly 80% of the electricity is from the combustion of pulverized coal. The production of the PAHs from power plant is in a large amount. In this thesis, the study of the PAHs formation from coal combustion is performed. With this, we expect that it can provide basis for clean energy production and can help in the reduction of these organic pollution. On the other hand, the situation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in our country is severe with the fast social development. The traditional landfill and composting may take great land source. Though they are the simplest ways, but they can not treat MSW effectively because of the secondary pollution. Incineration is getting more and more popular because of its apparent reduction of MSW volume and quantity. Since the complexity of the MSW component, especially high content of the organic compounds, the formation of toxic pollutants is essential. Meanwhile there is few study of organic pollutants formation from MSW incineration. In this thesis, the study of these two questions (the PAHs formation from coal combustion and from MSW incineration) on small-scale reactor has been carried out. They are financially supported by the National Basic Research Program (G1999022211) and National Natural Science Fund (N59836210). The following studies have been taken out:...
