Ecosystem appraisalis to undertake analysis on ecosystem structure and function and further put forward relevant countermeasures upon developing trend and driving momentums of the ecosystem in order to provide decision-makers with ecosystem management information. Ecological function zones are classified and categorized by their spatial and geographic characteristics and factors like ecosystem functioning and efect, ecological environment quality and sensitivity, importance degree of ecological service function, etc. The purpose of such classification is to identify ecological environment problems; diferentiate zones with fragility and magnitude; draw out apriority list of ecosystem and environment protection; and provide scientific basis for the ecological environment protection and establishment and the management of ecological function zones.This study not only undertakes an overall analysis on the current status and developing trend of ecological environment in the territory of Qingdao City, but also evaluates the quality and sensitivity of the whole ecosystem; specifies the importance of ecosystem service functions; identifies the existing problems and drive momentums; and also diferentiates and analyses the quality and sensitivity of the ecological environment and the importance of ecosystem service functions upon their various spatial and geographic distributions. This study further marks off diferent ecological function zones in Qingdao City and also presents relevant key tasks, goals and measures of protection and establishment of the ecological function zones.As a co-host for the 2008 Olympic Games, Qingdao faces historic opportunities and challenges. In line with requirements for a modern international metropolis, Qingdao has made great efforts to establish an ecotype city. Based on the establishment of an indicator assessment system and application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Suitability Indicators to examine and assess the present eco-environmental qualities. The results show that the present quality of the eco-environment in Qingdao is goodt, reaching and exceeding the standard in Grade I. The deficiency is the natural resource sustainable indicator. At 0.567, it is lower than the pass line. This is because Qingdao is located in North China where there is a severe shortage of water resources geographically. In general, its climate is relatively cold. Qingdao, supporting a large population with a very small tillable area, has made great efforts to develop its tourism industry. Because of the fast-growing economy, the consumption of energy resources has been ever increasing and the total amount of various pollutants discharged into the environment remains at a relatively high level, such as surface water pollution, declining forest quality and function, meadow decrease and degradation, declining biodiversity, protruding agricultural pollution, descending ecosystem anti-interfere ability, etc. The task to control pollution and improve the city's environmental quality is still very arduous.Qingdao city stands in areas of ecosystem with sensitivity through low to high degrees. The extremely sensitive takes 27.6% of the total city area,with the distribution in cantonal, Licang area, north Jiaonan, etc. The high sensitive area takes 19.1%, with distribution in Wangcun area, Wenquan area, Baoshan area, Dazhushang area, etc. The sensitive area takes 48.0%, with distribution in west Jimo, north Jiaozhou, etc. The light sensitive ares takes 5.3%, with distribution in northeast Cuishao, south Jiaonan, etc.The most ecological important area takes 9.5%, with distribution in north Nanshu, Wangcheng area, Tianzhuang area, Pudong area, Nanquan area, Beiguan area, Langya area, etc. The important area takes 19.7%, with distribution in Xiagezhaung area, Xinhe area, Huanshan area, Liuting area, Xin'an area, etc. The relative important area takes 64.2%, with distribution in middle Pingdu, north Laixi, east Jimo, east Laoshan,etc. The common ares takes 6.6%, with distribution in Shuiji area, Liyuan area, Hanhai area, Zhongyun area, etc.On the basis of ecosystem assessment, four eco-regions and 24 sub-ecoregions are divided. The four eco-regions are: Hilly structure control eco-region, the chief developing region of maritime sales surround and beside the Kiaochow bay eco-region, the ecological agriculture developing region in central plain eco-region and Coastline eco-region.
