The production of materials data is the research course of materials science. Matrials data has become the power to drive the materials research .Nowadays, with the development of materials science and the popularity of Internet, proliferation and complexity of material science data have increased enormously. Therefore, difficulties encountered by materials researchers are how to manage and store various material science data efficiently, how to dig out valuable data to a great extent, how to share the resources of material data and realize knowledge innovation, how to enhance the efficiency of materials research, and how to decrease the cost and time of new material discovery when engaging in material science researches. In the background, materials informatics was put forward and developed. The development of materials informatics contributed to resolve the challenges and conformed to the tendency of the development of materials science and technology.Since the proposition of materials informatics in 1999, it has been widely applied to combinatorial sciences and material design. And in many countries special institutes and enterprises are established to engage in the active research of materials informatics and its products. Currently, the problems of development of materials informatics are not enough research profundity, not enough recognition, weak standardization of material data, weak awareness of data share and lack of professional researchers. On the ground of the analysis of the current status and the development tendency of research, the paper engaged in the research of essential theory of materials informatics. The good foundation to develop materials informatics in China was illustrated and the development vision of materials informatics was proposed. Those are realizing the standardization of material data and database, establishing material repository and platform of materials informatics, finding the breakthrough point and developing the research on materials informatics actively, and Accelerating the training and education of materials informatics researchers.The research of standardization of material data was carried out. The importance of standardization of material data to construction and share of materials data and E-science was discussed. MatML is the popular marking language of material data. The development course and schema structure of MatML was introduced. According to the disadvantages of MatML, the opinion of material data cell was put forward. The standardization of material data was realized through XML schema. The standardization language of material data MatCellXML was constructed. Compared with the MatML, MatCellXML has some advantages, easy to understand, more abroad range of information representation, benefit of representation of more complex information and standardization of materials terms. The specific material data was represented by MatCellXML and MatCellXML was adopted as the output format of materials information of the information web west light alloy.The total design principle of platform was put forward. According to the analysis of several typical web architectures, three tier web architectures and B/S mode were adopted as the web architecture of materials informatics platform. The total framework of materials informatics was demonstrated. The platform of materials informatics was composed of six modules, communication layer, representation layer, data layer, function layer, interface layer and user layer. The module of data layer was the core of the platform. The four key technologies for realizing platform of materials informatics were discussed which are system integration technology, data mining of materials data, material knowledge technology and the module of secure transmission of material data.The platform framework of materials informatics was applied to the optimization design and the evaluation of materials character of engine valve. The optimization design platform was developed accordingly. The platform was applied in the specific corporation.The essence of materials informatics was discussed. From the inherent and exterior reason, the application prospect of the subject was discussed and the existence of materials informatics was analyzed theoretically. The recognition of subject was discussed from the four aspects which were the definition, research object, subject character and research content of materials informatics. Materials informatics was recognized as a cross subject merging materials science and information science and a applicable subject which can promote the development of material science research and material industry. From the four aspects which were theoretic foundation, subject structure, research methodology and relation with other subjects, the subject theoretical system of materials informatics was presented. The subject was divided into five parts, theoretic foundation, methodology, application technologies and engineering system. According to the three characters of materials informatics, the suggestions of developing materials informatics were put forward.
