The modification of mechanical pulp is one of effective method to further improve its quality. In this paper, the modification mechanism and application technology of TMP long fiber are studied. It lays the foundation for enhancing the quality and enlarge the application of mechanical pulp.1. After treated by alkaline peroxide, the extractive in jack pine TMP long fiber decreased evidently, its surfaces produced large numbers of carboxyl. The H2O2 dosage in AP treated process had evident effect on brightness of sheet. The action of alkali in AP process is to make structure of cell wall loose. With the alkali dosage increasing, the extractive content decreased greatly, carboxyl content increased significantly, the O/C ratio of fiber surface increased slightly, at the same time, its physical properties increased.2. Alkaline peroxide treatment of TMP long fibres followed beating yielded excellent physical and optical characteristics. The results indicated that NaOH had positive effect on the physical properties, H2O2 evidently influenced the optical properties, while the treatment temperature and time did not significantly affect the sheet characteristics.3. TEMPO-mediated oxidation (TOX) is particularly effective in promoting tensile and burst indices which can be increased by 4.3 and 3.4 times, respectively. When the TOX is in combination with AP yielded higher physical properties. The TOX pulp has greater beatability than the AP counterpart did.4. Beating alkaline peroxide treated long fibers mixed with separated short fibers (≤R100), which can produce the handsheet met the Newsprint Standard of China. It is concluded that AP process plus refining have great potential in enhancing the quality of jack pine mechanical fibres, which may indeed represent a breakthrough in jack pine TMP improvement.
