Due to the vast territory, the economic development is not balanced with the resource distribution of China. Developing the HVDC transmission is helpfull to optimize resource allocation and energy supply. As more and more HVDC transmission lines are constructed in China, they are bound to go pass buildings, trees and other complex environments, so we are more concerned about the DC electric field effect on people, plants and equipments. This paper studies on the total electric field under the HVDC transmission lines in the vicinity of buildings, trees and other complex environments, and the research results can be applied on the design and construction of HVDC transmission lines in China.A 2-D computation method for the total electric field under the HVDC transmission lines in the vicinity of buildings is proposed based on the analytical method, which simplifies the 3-D field problem into a 2-D field problem under some assumption. The method is verified by the comparison of the computation results and experimental results obtained from the experiment platform in the SGC UHVDC Test Base. This method is simple and can be applied for engineering in the case of less precision requirement. The method is used to calculate the total electric field under the HVDC transmission lines with different types of buildings in the vicinity.A 3-D computation method for the total electric field under the HVDC transmission lines is proposed based on the analytical method. The method is verified by experiment. The method can consider the influence of wires sag, surrounding buildings, up-and-downs on the ground, lines crossing the forests and other situations. The method is used to analyse the distance between forest and crossing lines and the suggested values of the distance is given. The 3-D computation method for the total electric field under the HVDC transmission lines is used to analyse the distribution characteristics of the total electric field when the single-circuit horizontally arranged HVDC transmission lines, single-circuit vertically arranged HVDC transmission lines and double-circuit DC transmission lines on the same tower are in the vicinity of buildings with different building heights, building lengths, building widths, distances between building and lines, lines heights, distances between two poles and et al. Some suggestions are proposed which are significances for the future construction of HVDC transmission lines. An artificial neural network model of the total electric field under the HVDC transmission lines in the vicinity of buildings is proposed for the purpose of more convenient application for engineering. The model predicts well and can be used to predict the total electric field at any position when the HVDC transmission lines are in the vicinity of buildings.
