As a literatiant of Ming and Qing Period, garden represents an attitude and life style of self-examination. "Historical vitality" of gardening would be dispelled by only technologic study, which can hardly be taken into the concern of the scholars of art history. Garden is associated with people from the very beginning. The historical connotation of a private garden is far beyond itself when there is a tight association between this garden and the destiny of the host’s family. Jichang Garden in Wuxi is exactly such a sample. From the first host Qin Jin returned home and purchase a Buddhist temple to build a villa, Jichang Garden belonged to the family almost all the time. From the golden age of garden construction in the late Ming Dynasty to the great honor on account of royal attention in Kangxi-Qianlong era, it can be a special and interesting study of gardening research. The main line of the dissertation is with Jichang Garden, three focus issues in gardening research will be discussed. First, host’s will in garden design and construction. Second, the development of literati garden in the late Ming Dynasty. Third, the private gardens in southern Yangtzi Delta as the sample of royal gardens. Meanwhile, various artists’ paintings will be used in my study to reveal gardening participants’ propensity and life.
