A Study On Major Discourses Of Gardens In The Song Dynasty

The thesis studied major discourses of gardens in ancient text books of Song dynasty and garden ruins of song.The purpose is to clarify that how the concept of " Yuanlin" was constructed by frames and key concept and category in the song dyansty?These two aspects composed the whole structures of the essay.Firstly,the offical and private category of books;Secondly,the classification system of leishu;These two frameworks of knowledge both composed the understanding system of Song dynasty.(The second chapter)The paper firstly studied how to construct the basic concepts of gardens in five different contexts:the first two contexts are in the direct and indirect explanation of "empire and private garden" in xiaoxue of JIN category(xiaoxue,yi,and zhouli).The third context is direct and indirect explanation of "empire and private garden" in SHI category.The fourth context is in the classification system of Leishu,which classified and defined the concept of empire garden and private.The fifth context is in WENJI,in which the concept" garden" was displaced by other words.(The third chapter)Secondly,the thesis studied the moral judgement of gardens in public discourses of history and confucian book by Zhuxi and Ercheng,which reflected the usestage,undstanding and moral criteria of gardens were strictly framed by confucian moral criteria.(The fourth chapter)Then based on the studies of Garden Records,the paper analysized the multiple explained concept "Le",which also effected related idea,such as "public happiness and private happiness","inner happiness and outer happiness","ultimate happiness","happiness of gentleman",and other aesthestic concepts.The concept of Le mainly derived from Confucian culture which also greatly influenced the aesthestic of gardens.(The fifth chapter)At last,because the discourses of method of design had not appeared systematically in Song texts,the essay studied the design method through different fragments:1,studied the layout of Guange garden which described detailly in texts;2,studied the key concept "viewing mountain" and its influence on building and appreciating garden;3,studied the imitating of natural water at garden in discourses,4,studied the different method towards pot water and cutting plants based on different attitude such as"following the nature of things";5,studied the selection of plants according to different occupation;6,studied the repeatedly appeared discourse on fence scenery,weaving methods,etc.(The sixth chapter).Based on two knowledge frameworks in Song dynasty,the essay studied Song gardens according to its knowledge system,concept,idea,etc,and to construct a plumpy,multiple Song dynasty garden status.
