The composition designs and performances of LOVA propellants are investigated on the basis of thorough analysis of constraints of caseless gun bullet system to propellant performance under the program of caseless ammunitions.Since there exists some disadvantages such as poor mechanic properties and much higher burning rate pressure exponents (?) in the fundamental formulations, this work is devoted to the improvements of combustion characteristics and mechanic properties of LOVA propellants. The effects of the crystal shape, size and contents of nitroamine particles, the types of binder, plasticizer and surface-active agents and the contents of NC on combustion performance are studied by closed bomb tests. In the mechanic properties tests, the effects of the types of binders, plasticizers and solid fillers, the interaction between binders and solid fillers and technological procedures on propellant mechanic properties are researched. The evaluation methods of propellant vulnerabilities in laboratory scale are screened out to evaluate heat endurance by analysis and classifying of potential contretemps during propellant development, production, storage, and transportation and in battlefields. Evaluation results indicate that the designed compositions show very good heat endurance.Base on the foregoing studies on combustion performance, mechanic properties and heat-resistance performance of LOVA propellants, the energetic binders suitable for caseless bullet propellant charge and the coating procedures are obtained and the charge structural designs of caseless bullet propellants are conducted. Results of gun firing tests show the ballistic performances of caseless bullet propellant charge could meet with the prerequisites.
