Generation resources and electrical power loads are distributed unbalancedly in China, which cause that large capacity and long distance power transmission are main characteristics of China power grid. Some key technical problems concerned with improving transmission capacity and stability of power grid are urgent to be solved. FACTS technology, with the best potential in the development of China power grid, is required immediately. FACTS technologies, such as TCSC, SVC, and STATCOM, were applied in China power grid for several years, but few researches on series compensation device based on turn-on and turn-off apparatus was carried out. Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) is novel controllable series compensation technology which inserts a controllable series voltage into the transmission line to adjust the power flow, to improve system stability, to damp power oscillation, and to suppress SSR.This dissertation focused on analyzing performance of SSSC systemically and comprehensively, presenting electromechanical and electromagnetic transient models and algorisms which can be used to analyze the practical systems. Fundamental analysis of SSSC application in Henan power grid is carried out based on the pilot demonstration project. The work of this dissertation includes three aspects: 1) The development and application of SSSC technology are analyzed and summarized, which is the base of comprehensive investigation of steady state, electromechanical and electromagnetic transient performances of SSSC. 2) The power flow calculation model, the power flow control model, and the transient stability model are developed in PSASP, and the electromagnetic transient model is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. These models can be used for theoretical and industrial application of SSSC. 3) The analysis and simulations of SSSC application in Henan power grid are carried out using system data of Central China power grid, the results demonstrate proposed models and a demonstration work for the research on applying SSSC in China power grid is given.The main contributions are made as follows: 1) the method of injecting current at additional nodes is presented to solve the interface problem between the general system analysis software and SSSC model. SSSC power flow calculation model is developed in power flow analysis module of PSASP. 2) Through theoretical analysis and equations deducting on single machine infinite bus system with SSSC, the interaction between SSSC output/interior variables and system variables, and the function of suppressing low frequency oscillation are analyzed.
