The technology of reverberation chamber (RC) is a creative result of the development of electromagnetic measurement technologies. Conventionally, the electromagnetic measurements are calibrated and conducted under the concept of uniform plane wave; however, RC is calibrated and measured under the concept of statistical uniform. Therefore, RC has many special advantages compared with traditional methods. Based on the research work of pioneers, this dissertation devotes the efforts to the theory, classification, design, validation and measurement of RCs.At the beginning of this dissertation, the history and achievements of RCs are introduced and the common electromagnetic test environments are introduced also. Electromagnetic theory, statistical plane wave theory and the ray tracing theory of reverberation chambers are studied in Chapter III. In this chaper, Equations of electromagnetic fields in three dimensional RC with active sources have been deduced with eigen-equation method for the first time. The new analytical formulae of electromagnetic fields in RC shall be a good guide to the research of RC in the future. So, eigen mode theory is the main work and is one of the original creations of this dissertation. The working mechanism of a RC is classified into five types for the first time. The physical of characteristics and the meaning of each type of working mechanism are also expatiated. This work is good for understanding the electromagnetic mechanism of different types of RC, and is an important guide to the RCs design. This is another important original creations of this dissertation. The characteristics as well as the types of reverberation chambers are presented in chapter IV. The conceptions of symmetrical mode emission and asymmetrical mode emission are proposed for the first time in this dissertation. It has been proved analytically that the field uniformity of a RC,especially in lower working frequency, can be improved by applying symmetrical mode emission or asymmetrical mode emission, and the method how to apply is proposed in this dissertation. This method was validated by a practical test. And the results show that a better field uniformity is obtained. This is an important foundation to the source-stirred RCs. Principles of machine-stirred chambers and frequency-stirred chambers are discussed. The capabilities of RC's evaluation methods in chapter V and the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test in RCs in chapter VI are studied refer to the standard IEC61000-4-21 [1]. New calibration and measurement methods are suggested for the reverberation chambers with source stirring, this is the new contribution to RC's standard, because the standard only considered the situations of RCs with mechanical stirrer(s). The detail design procedure of RCs is discussed in chapter â…¦. Principles of machine-stirred chambers and frequency-stirred chambers are discussed.
