From basic conception of natural ventilation, multi-zone network approach is selected for establishing thermodynamic model of a steady state system of natural ventilation for the tall residential building with the atrium by comparing different methods. Systematic research on the characteristic of natural ventilation in the tall residential building with the atrium is carried out respectively in stack effect, wind pressure effect and two together. The opening's area, position and horizontal airflow are simulated that have effect on natural ventilation in the tall residential building with the atrium. One hand, the impact of top opening of the atrium of the tall residential building on its natural ventilation is studied; the achieved results indicate that the area of top opening of the atrium of tall residential building is the bottleneck of ventilation rate. On the other hand, the function of horizontal passway in the atrium of tall residential building is emphatically researched. Through simulating different cases of horizontal passway, it is found that the horizontal airflow take a breath contribution to natural ventilation rate of the tall residential building with the atrium. The case of only one horizontal passway in the tall residential building with the atrium in reality life is also studied. The result shows that when only horizontal passway lies in relatively height position of the building, it is more favorable to natural ventilation of this building.24-hour simulation results indicate that natural ventilation in the atrium of tall residential building and ambient space is in night better than in daytime when stack effect works; natural ventilation rate is mainly decided by wind speed when wind pressure acts; when the two act together, stack effect can offer steady ventilation rate, and wind pressure brings the greater instantaneous ventilation volume.By adopting the methods of both field measurement and questionnaire, the indoor environment, especially thermal environment is investigated; it is found out that natural ventilation can prove the thermal environment of the tall residential building with the atrium, which is accord with the results of the simulation.Meanwhile, the several problems about natural ventilation in applying to the tall residential building with the atrium are discussed and explained:(1) Night ventilation in the atrium of tall residential building;(2) The effect of horizontal passway on natural ventilation;(3) The effect of the area of top opening on natural ventilation in the atrium of tall residential building;(4) Integrated design of natural ventilation in the tall residential building with theatrium.Finally, the studied results are summarized, and the future of this subject is predicted.The innovations and originalities of this paper are mainly included as following:(1) The multi-zone model of natural ventilation based on the tall residential building with the atrium is set up. We studied the effect of the driving force, the top opening of the atrium, openings of the horizontal passway and numbers, position and size of area of the different openings on the natural ventilation in the atrium of tall residential building, and the relation of these factors is also researched. Through comparison, the results of measurement and simulation agree well. The achieved results are significative for optimization design of natural ventilation in the tall residential building with the atrium, and one simple and applicable is introduced for analysis of natural ventilation of the buildings with the atrium.(2) Through field measurement and questionnaire, the reality of the indoor environment of the occupant living in the tall residential building with the atrium is studied. The conception of the difference of the temperature between indoors and outdoors is put forward to analyze the effect of natural ventilation on the cooling of the tall residential building with the atrium, which is more accurate in evaluating the cooling effect of natural ventilation on tall residential building with the atrium. This is a new methods for evaluate the effect of natural ventilation. By the experiment some fuzzy acquaintance is clarified, for example, the stratification of the temperature isn't such distinct as people think that. The open top opening of the atrium strengthens natural ventilation, which weakens the effect of the stratification of the temperature.(3) Natural ventilation of the atrium of tall residential building is first systematically studied, which has open top opening and horizontal passway. Through simulating different cases, we analyze the factors that influence on natural ventilation in the atrium of tall residential building. The case on the different size of area of the top opening is simulated and analyzed, the result show that the size of the top opening is an important factor that restrict the natural ventilation of the atrium of the tall residential building. The achieved results are useful to integrated design of natural ventilation of such building with the atrium.
