The sustainable development of buildings and housing shortage are two topics in modern city. A good resolution for the two problems is the growing number of high-rise residential buildings with an atrium in the centre designed by architects. This kind of atrium has many advantages:good luminous environment,comfortable indoor environment and nice natural ventilation etc.In the present study, the details of environment of atrium were investigated by a large number of researchers,and some valuable results were obtained.However, they focused on some aspects and neglected problems.This paper carried out a study about the effect of atrium configuration characteristic on buoyancy-driven ventilation of high-rise residential buildings, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and model experiment method.First, domestic and international study about atrium of high-rise residential buildings was summed up,and innovation points of this study were highlighted.Then the basic theoretical of numerical calculation, as well as the software was described.The experiments and numerical simulation results were compared to each other. Finally, this paper carried out CFD study about the effect of atrium configuration characteristic on buoyancy-driven ventilation of high-rise residential buildings.And the results are as follows:(1)Effect of atrium shape on buoyancy-driven ventilation of high-rise residential buildings.High-rise residential buildings with larger aspect ratio and same area atrium got better ventilation effect.But this kind of difference is not obvious.The difference of each condition is less than 7%.(2)Effect of atrium area on buoyancy-driven ventilation of high-rise residential buildings.The increase of atrium size is good for buoyancy-driven ventilation of high-rise residential buildings.But when the size of atrium reached to a certain range,the increase of atrium size could hardly improve the buoyancy-driven ventilation effect of high-rise residential buildings.(3)The best ratio between atrium size and height of high-rise residential building. The larger atrium size got better buoyancy-driven ventilation effect of high-rise residential buildings;the additional lm of the height of high-rise residential building caused the increase of 0.043m of the size of square atrium to meet need of the indoor thermal comfort.
