The Tarim River is a meander and sandy river located in south of Xinjiang. The large amount ofsediment deposit causes the riverbed and channel raise continuously, accordingly the conveyance ability ofwater for the channel is reduced enormously. The flooding hazard to surrounding areas is increasing withriverbed rising. The riverbed evolutes frequently and results the difficulty to divert the water from the riverfor irrigation, the flooding hazard which is caused by the riverbank failure occurs frequently. So the studyon permeable pile groin to protect the banks and sediment regulation approaches of the Tarim River is ofgreat significance to water utilization, flood disaster reduction and ecological rehabilitation.The research objective is to improve and recover the natural ability of the Tarim River. The mainapproach is sediment regulation and river channel improvement. Based on channel patterns andcharacteristics analysis of riverbed evolution, sediment regulation approaches are studied. Water andsediment regulation by permeable pile groin is the key technology to be suggested. The key points are onwater retarding and sediment promoting, and structural stability of permeable pile groin. The waterconservancy measures, which aim to recover ecology at the downstream, are also discussed.The conclusions are listed as follows.(1)A new classification method of channel patterns and characteristics is proposed. The channelpatterns and characteristics of the main Tarim River are classified.(2)A rtificial riverbed evolution of alluvial river as a new conception is given. A conceptual model ofthe main Tarim River riverbed evolution is established.(3)Sediment regulation approaches of the main Tarim River include water and sediment regulationby permeable regulating structures, sediment preventing and reducing by soil and water conservation etc.(4)Based on water retarding,water preventing and sediment promoting principle, the flow velocityformulas and sedimentladencapacity formulas above and below the permeable pile groin are derivedrespectively.(5)Based on water division, water retarding and sediment promoting principle, the flow velocityformulas and sedimentladencapacity formulas below the permeable pile groin is developed.(6)Comprehensive roughness formula, velocity formula and sedimentladencapacity formula in thenarrowed riverbed by permeable pile groin are developed.(7)General and maximum scouring depth formulas of permeable pile groin are developed(8)Analytical method for structure stability of permeable pile groin is presented.
