The test capability of high voltage and high current is one of the symble of the level of design and manufactory of electrical apparatus for a country. This paper carries out the investigation of a new synthetic test circuit—XIHARI test circuit, gives the detailed intrpduction on its design, construction and applications.The paper firstly gives the analysis on the principle of the synthetic test for high voltage high current circuit breakers. The equivelance of the tests is discussed. As for the ultra-high voltage circuit breakers, three equivelant conditions is summarized. The traditional Weil-Dobke test circuit is emploed as an example to compare the equivelance. The analysereveals that this traditional test circuit is not valid for ultra-high voltage circuit breakers. New test circuit is needed to be designed to meet the requirement of development of ultra-high apparatus.The interruption process of circuit breakers is then studied in chapter 3. Three types of arc resistance model are introduced. The arc resistance model equations are fabricated. By compareing the physical meaning of the models, the Mayr arc model is choosed to use in this investigation. Based on the model equation, a PSCAD-based arc model is constructed.Based on the constructed arc model, the interruption processed of Hatichi synthetic test circuit and the EPIC synthetic test circuit are simulated in chapter 4. The paper gives the topology, features and operation principles of these two types of synthetic test circuit. The arc current folwing through the breaker duiring interruption and the TRV applied upon the breaker after interruption are calculated. By using the direct test circuit as the basis, the TRV waveforms are compared, and the equivelance is nanlyzed.A new synthetic test circuit capable for ultra-high circuit breaker which named as XIHARI test circuit is designed in chapter 5. The structure of this new test circuit is introduced. The TRV waveform is calculated and copared with that of the Hitachi test circuit and the EPIC test circuit. It is concluded that the XIHARI test circuit has more equivelant than Hitachi test circuit and the EPIC test circuit in TRV parameters.Lastly, the construction and application of the XIHARI test circuit is introduced. It is reveals that this test circuit is operational stable and reliably. The test results are accepted in the world.
