Plant male--sterile is existed in plant kingdom. It is easy to producehybrid seeds using male--sterile plants and reduce the cost value of seedproduction without anthers taking off by hands. Soybean male sterile mutantS903B were used in this study that S903B derived spontaneous1y from a plantof the three--way cross [(Q7--6--1 X Heil2--1 ) XZhechu No. l j which selectedby the soybean research section Zhejiang University in l994. In order to revealwhether S903B was a new male ster ile mutant and its genetics, a series ofstudies on the per.formance, genetic mechanism and cytomorphologicalcharacteri stics of the male steri l ity were carried out. The main results wereas follows:l. S903B has a tight plant shape with middle plant high and resistance tolodging. Ripening time was at middle of July when sowing in spring in Zhejiangprovince. It appears that photosytherate delayed in the leave and stems whenthere was no pods or few pods on plant. There was no large difference on planthigh, nodes and branches per plant between fertile plant and sterile plant, but large difference did existed on seeds or pods per plant. Thus leads tothe significant difference between them on LA, dry weight of leave and stemsper plant, SLA and LWR. The all features of S903B were higher than fertileplant except the SLA.2. The sterility and pod set features of S903B revealed that female fertileof male sterile plants was normal, therefore, S903B was a male--sterilefemale--fertile mutant. Artificial pollination experiments revealed that thepollen germination experiments showed that, S903B sterile plants, the degreeof male sterility was very high (the germination percentage of pollens wasless than 0. 80%) and the amle sterility was quite stable. Genetic data ledto the conclusion that the rmle sterility of S903B was controlled by a slnglerecessive nuclear gene by investigating the fertility ratio of S903B plantswhich deriyed from natural pollination and MSms pedigrees. The ratio offerti1ity to steri1ity was 3: l. Interva1 sowing MSffis of S903B showed that thesteri1ity was unaffected by the 1ight and temperature. That means this malesteri1e was not a photo--temperature sensitive type.3. The resu1ts of cytomorPho1ogica1 observations showed that there was anobvious1y difference in dyeing degree, starch content, satiety and aperturesof po11en comParing to ferti1ity p1ants during the po11en formation stage, thus 1ed to the conc1usion of po11en abortion of ma1e steri1e p1ant.4. After verifying the MSMS, MSms and msms respective1y from offspring ofwhich hybrid produced by crossing with S903B (msms) and 3 genotypes, studyon the difference between MSMS and msms using RAPD techniques was conductedin the research. The DNA fragment variant existed on1y using primer No. 19 in45 primers. Therefore, we can use primer No. 19 to identify the MSMS and msmsin thi s experiment.5. Unti1 now, six soybean ma1e steri1e types from ms1 to fns6 have beenreported in the wor1d and NJ89--1 was a1so found in summer season soybean tyDethat was reported by Soybean Research 1nstitute, Nanjing Agricultura1University. In this study, the ma1e sterile fema1e ferti1e mutants------S903Bwas the new one in spring soybean with re1ative1y short growth period. It canbe used in soybean recurrent se1ection program and has its potentia1 in soybeanbreeding. Anyhow, it is essentia1 to take a11e1ism tests if S903B mutant wasa11e1ism with ms,to ms6.
