Studies on dynamic simulation of crop growth processes began in 1960s along with the application in ecology of system analysis methodology and computer technology. Crop simulation is referred to integrate the crop and the surrounding environmental factors as a whole, apply the ecological principles and systematic analysis methods, analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the physiological processes, such us crop growth, development, photosynthesis, apparatus building and yield formation, the effects of environment and planting technology on these processes, set up mathematic models and simulate the processes of crop growth by running the models in the computer. It is easy to see that the computer technology of crop simulation developed in past 40 years can hardy meet the demands of the rapid developing modern agriculture considering the development of daily changed agricultural information technology. Thus, based on the several years field experiment and reviews on the publications of previous studies, the author set up a Simulation Model for Potato Growth and Development (HPOTATO) and developed a set of related software based on Visual Basic 6.0 in Chinese format. The software has supplied a base for Web based extension of the simulation results and other research achievements. The main innovation of the present study includes the following three aspects: 1) this is a first try to set up a potato growth and development simulation model in China. The model consists of potato phenology development, plant height, leaf age development, leaf area index changes, canopy photosynthesis of the community, dry-matter accumulation and yield formation. The principles of potato phenological period change in different ecological conditions, the quantities contribution of soil temperature in mulching condition on phenology development was given in the phenological development sub-model, which completely changed the traditional methods in analyzing the soil temperature effects. The other sub-models would help the farmers to select the best time of planting and harvesting in different regions as well as in greenhouse, to regulate the community development by cultivation technology. So the studies not only can enhance the understanding of the relationships between the crop and surrounding environmental factors, but also can promote the field crop production. 2) On the temperature affected coefficient nonlinear model, the author demonstrated that the nonlinear model submitted by Yin Xinyou(1994) was oriented form Gao Lingzhi(1989). After that the author completely amended the Gas's model. Based on the above analysis, the author submitted a Gauss function based nonlinear model for crop growth and development simulation and supplied a method by using SAS software to obtain the related parameters. The new model was successfully used in the potato system simulation; the modeling results showed the nonlinear model was useful. 3) On the computer language selection, the author chose the Chinese format VB 6.0 to carry the potato growth and development simulation and obtained a set of complete software. This also is a first try in China. The photosynthesis of the canopy, community leaf area index development anddry-matter accumulation effected by daily changed temperature and radiation were given by running VB 6.0 interface, which absolutely amended the shortage of traditional method by using several modeling digit to draw a smooth carve expressing the modeling results. This is an advance in crop dynamic simulation research. The study of VB 6.0 based potato simulation software supplies a possibility that the extension worker and other interester use the software though long distance in web side.1 Advance and Problems in Potato Growth and Development SimulationAt abroad, the recent researches of potato system simulation mainly focused on the effects of global climate changes on potato yield, the characteristics of potato growth and development, the simulation based potato production zonation. The effects of global climate ch...
